How to take control of HAE appointments and treatment decisions

Leah Sirota, diagnosed with hereditary angioedema in 2019, shares how she prepares for appointments and makes confident treatment decisions.

Transcript

I found that the most effective way to have appointments is to pre-set up the questions that you have, but not only pre-set up the questions you have, kind of have a general idea of what the answer would be already.

That way, you can kind of expect what is going to be said, and there’s not going to be any surprises.

I guess another thing is to be more firm in my choices. A lot of times, I get the questions of, “Are you sure you want to do this?” And I think the best answer is, “Yes, I am sure. This is what I want to try.”

Also, if there’s already treatment plans that are on the table when I get started, I would research those treatment plans.

Research the pros and cons within your lifestyle. Research the methods of the treatment plan. Research the potential side effects as well, and then kind of gauge what you might already prefer before the appointment even happens.
